Xu Min

New Landscapes

Solo Exhibition
March 18, 2004 - March 28, 2005

Opening Time: 6-9 p.m.

As a child in Mainland China, Xu Min’s artistic development was influenced by his father’s art collections and by painters who were friends of the family. He fell in love with the work of the Impressionists at an early age. But the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976 made it impossible for him to study art openly.

When he was 22, he packed his guitar and oil paints and headed for the countryside where he lived and painted secretly for 13 years. Mother nature was his only teacher.

Xu Min eventually was able to paint natural scenes everywhere, including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jianghxi, San Xi, Shanxi, Sechuan, Guizchou, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shangdong, Hubei, Hunan, Gansu and Xinjiang. His time in Xinjiang had the most influence on his future work. He writes, “When I was holding my hunting rifle and a drawing board on my back and standing on the open and borderless Gobi desert, I could deeply feel the presence of an invisible and supernatural force. There was no sense of era, no sense of year, dynasty, time, sound, no country frontier, politics, parties or religion”.

The spiritual sensations became deeply embodied in his work and persisted through years as he tried to leave his embattled country. Xu Min finally reached Hong Kong and then Australia. During these formative years, he realized that serious art practice would require the study of history. As he put it, “In art exhibition halls and museums of many countries, I acted like a baby sucking up the nutrients of art”. Ultimately, he returned to his first love, Impressionism.

Xu Min now lives in Vancouver, BC after extensively exhibiting in Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, Japan, France and the United States. Through his painting skills, he continues to spill out his love for “the mother of mankind”, our vast earth. Vancouver, the city of gardens with its flowering boulevards and lush parks, provides ongoing inspiration for his scenic views.

The Howe Street Gallery is honored to bring to you a selection of paintings by world- renowned artist Kyung Ah Hwang. Her work reaches beyond the boundaries of time and space to capture omnipotent glimpses into the heart of sublimity--- moments of inexplicable epiphany saturated with the divine trinity of love, beauty, and life. Alive with the idea of the sublime immortalized by the Romantics, Kyung Ah’s work envelops the viewer in a magical realm sustained by balanced, harmonious compositions mapped by cubist rhythms of line. Her paintings reveal the movement in a moment. It is as though her brushstrokes are animated by the wings of an angel, generating a sense of depth though an abundance of diaphanous layers, which work together to create a light-diffused atmosphere of a weightless paradise. Suspended in moments of contentment achieved through infinite love and intimacy, Kyung Ah’s subjects have made contact with the sublime. Though the intimate relationships forged within self and other, Kyung Ah’s forms have transcended mortal constraints, floating weightlessly within the nexus of an earthly paradise. Curtains spill through sun-drenched windows to illuminate intertwined lovers. Women of grace and beauty press their faces into the falling light, infinitely open to the universe, their closed eyes signifying boundless trust, faith, and a quality of presence possible through quiet introspection. Kyung Ah surpasses the particular to project a universal language of love, beauty, and harmony. The dynamics of line and light are complimented by luminous depth and the silent tranquility of her subjects. Kyung Ah’s most recent creative direction extends beyond the immediacy of the lived moment into the intricacies of memory. Through alluding to childhood and using multiple layers of light, Kyung Ah filters reality through the lens of abstraction, bringing the primacy of subjective vision into lyrical focus. Kyung Ah has proven herself to be a master of the acrylic medium. Evident is the superior level of intuition that informs her soulful glimpses into intimacy. Kyung Ah has clearly transcended time and space to create a heaven on earth, sharing her unique connection to the sublime through her superior aesthetic.
